A common way to adjust the backlash of the worm gear assembly is to modify the center distance. Once assembled, this adjustment required major rework of the transmission case. The use of double worm gears allows the backlash to be adjusted by moving the worm axially. This greatly simplifies assembly and maintenance operations. Backlash Adjustment Mechanism and Adjustment Method
Double-lead worms create a difference between the right and left flanks, providing a unique tooth profile in which the tooth thickness varies continuously, corresponding to the lead difference. (figure 1)
The worm gear is also formed on its left and right tooth flanks.
When such a worm and a worm wheel are arranged at a constant fitting distance and the worm moves in the axial direction, the tooth thickness of the worm meshing with the worm wheel changes so that the backlash can be adjusted.
